I put up the newsletter and calendar but I can't get the link to attach for the calendar. I will working on it.
How amazing has this weather been?! The kids have been loving all the great weather and being able to get outside everyday in the fresh air and sunshine. But as they say, if winter doesn't come in January or February, we'll get winter in April! Don't forget that the Magic show is tonight night! The kids are very excited to go and have been talking about this event for weeks. Also, Tuesday is Show What You Know night. Remember that you can also sign up for related arts on the Evening Street Newsletter. In our room it will be identical to our student-led conferences- playing math games and looking at writing. If you have missed that sign up here it is again: There will be no new spelling words this next week as we are at the end of the second trimester and working on report cards. Instead we will be focusing on plurals and suffixes in general. Next week, the March calendars and newsletters will be making their way home. Thanks to everyone for making the Valentines Day Party so much fun and a huge success! The kids had a blast with all the stuff that was planned and didn't seem to mind that there wasn't candy to pass out or receive :) In math we finished up area and fractions in Module 9 and took the test today. Next week we will be taking a break from our workbook (like in spelling) and be doing more with fractions such as equivalent fraction s and adding subtraction fractions with common denominator, along with learning about perimeter. Below are pictures from the past two weeks that involve projects, games, and investigations with area and fractions. We have also changed things up in the workings! Now instead of math and ELA the kids are working in their vocabulary workbooks. They read passages together and then work independently using those words in various ways. Since we finished up studying about plants last week, again we are taking a break from our workbooks . The kids are practicing "close reading" using the book Library Lion and doing various activities to enhance comprehension. With every "Rooted in Reading " book we do there is also a non-fiction book. Below you can see the kids are practicing their fluency, looking for main idea and details. Finally, Shelley Gill came to visit our school today! The kids created a wonderful Alaskan ABC book to share with her. They used Google Drive and Google Draw for the first time to create this work and did really well! I posted several videos of her talking with the kids on SeeSaw as well. Thank you to all the parents and students who made this years Student Led Conferences such a great success! The kids worked hard getting all their things together to share with you and even practiced with a friend! The kids had a lot of fun as evidence of all those smiles! Here are the trioramas that the kids created to go with their reports... In math kids are learning about and practicing rounding numbers to the 10's and 100's. In writing the kids are starting a new genre, fiction. We are focusing on making sure stories include the setting with both time and place and a description of the main characters. Here kids are meeting with their writing partners to run through ideas and help with each other with story ideas. ![]() As you and your child begin thinking about what Valentine's they want to give out this year, please keep in mind the district's food policy. As a school and a district, we are fully committed to each child's safety, and are always aware of food allergies. For this reason, please do not send in valentines with any form of candy or chocolate attached to them. On February 13th we will be making Valentine bags in class. I will be providing basic materials to decorate like the bags and colored paper. However, if your child has any specific decorations that he/she would want to use but we may not have such as stickers, etc…, please feel free to send in extra materials. Children will be able to exchange valentines on the afternoon of Feb. 14th at the Valentine’s Day Party. The party will be held on Tuesday, February 14 from 1:45 to 2:30. Room moms have put out a Google Doc regarding items they need. If you are signing up to bring in food items, please write the specifics on the Google doc- that way you don't need to email me and I can just look on the document. Please add the specific brand information d you are bringing no later than Tuesday, February 7. ![]() In writing this week the children continued to work on their persuasive piece I wanna Iguana , practicing to state their opinion and back up those reasons from the text. Using text evidence stems such as "On page ___ it says" or " According to the author ..." children are continuing to work on finding evidence in the text and then write about it. The next writing we will do will be fiction, focusing on good beginning and endings using the book My Father's Dragon as inspiration. Also in writing this week the kids started using the writing projects box as a way to change things up and try different forms of writing. The kids are loving all the hands on choice! As always they also love hands on fun games to practice their spelling words and parts of speech... In science children worked on their research project and trioramas for conferences next week. ![]() In math we continued to do double digit subtraction using both the number line and stacking to practice our borrowing. And the highlight of our week....Mia the snake! Thanks to Mrs. Quart we were able to borrow her corn snake Mia and observe her throughout the day. If kids wanted to watch her eat her lunch (tiny mouse) they were allowed to stay - video of that is up on SeeSaw. The kids loved having a pet for a day and are looking forward to the worms we will be getting in the Spring. Don't forget that next week in student led conferences and that they need to come with you! It will be tons of fun and they are so excited to show you everything they have been working so hard on.
