POSSIBLE SNOW DAY MONDAY...after talking with Mr. Bradley today I became aware that we will be getting a lot of snow Sunday night. So to be prepared I quickly put together a packet of the new spelling, some writing, math and reading nonfiction. There is a sticky note attached that your child wrote but basically it says if there is a snow day, do the work and bring it back completed on Tuesday (except of course words to learn due on Friday). If we have a delay or come to school , just bring the packet back UNFINISHED. No one is to do the work over the weekend- that would defeat the purpose! This of course is perfect timing for the persuasive writing the kids are doing! They are all writing letters to Dr. Bowers, offering their opinion on snow days! Below you will find an example:
Can you believe the 100th day of school is already here?! After some delicious treats this morning, the kids spent their $100 and did several activities throughout the day involving the number 100. Some kids wanted their picture taken with their new glasses so here they are! Below you will see the kids and the final roller coaster they created. There was lots of experimenting and unsuccessful tries at making it go, but eventually we got them all to run! The kids loved making their coasters but I think loved even more the ability to walk around and see other groups work. As a part of the reflective process, the kids will make a group poster and an iBook what they will then share with you at conferences! This was also a great activity to help teach children how to get along and work in a group. The poster below is what we used as an anchor chart to remind kids what the expectations were for getting along with others so that we can have fun and be productive!
What a great day it was for learning about science! Check out all these fantastic attempts at building hills, figuring out velocity, angles, inclined planes, gravity AND how to work with a group!! Afterward of course we reflected on all they had learned from today's trial and errors Check out #3!! Well, tomorrow is the big day and the kids are super excited to start making their roller coasters! We spent 10 minutes jotting down our ideas, thoughts, and questions about how to make roller coasters and here are a few of their thoughts...
Wow did we have fun today during science! The kids used homemade marshmallow launchers to continue to explore how much force it takes to make things move. Originally the large marshmallows were to heavy and with no tiny marshmallows around we ended up using pom-poms inside the cups. Then on Monday we gathered the data and introduced the concepts, mean, mode, and median
Hello everyone! Today's lesson in science was inquire based and dealt with force and motion. Vocabulary words we used today in our conversations were repel, attract, gravity force, motion, magnet, friction, non-contact forces and velocity. The kids were told that at the end of the time they had to race a car they created that could move without anything touching it. A table was set up with lots of different things available for them to use such as different kids of tape, string, cars, and all kinds of magnets. I gave them no other direction than that. After much trial and error we raced cars! The kids had a blast trying to figure out they needed to attach a magnet to the car and then "push" the magnet /car with another magnet. The trickiest part was figuring out the distance from which to hold the magnet to push it because you were disqualified if the magnets touched. I was so pleased to see some kids figure out the N-S , N-N, S-S pole connection!! Next week we explore making roller coasters on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The kids are so excited and ready to create them! Sorry for the problems we've been experiencing with the website. After I update the blog or create a button with a link, for some reason it is not sticking and doesn't post. Whole sentences are even missing from the blog! I am working with the company to try and fix it so your patience is much appreciated!
Conferences!! Since the buttons weren't sticking I thought I would try 2 ways to give you the sign up- first is the address, under that is the button. Hopefully one of those will work! All the information is on the sign up sheet but if you have any questions, please let me know! http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0948a4a82da0f94-student Good Morning! Tomorrow if the weather is good, Mr. Brinegar
Welcome everyone to 2015- It is going to be a fantastic year!!
I have posted in the Parent section the new calendar and newsletter, both of which will be coming home in paper form tomorrow. Also I have posted the book report forms which will be coming home on Friday. Mysteries is our next focus in book reports so many already picked out a book at library today. If you have a mystery at home, you can use one of them. You an of course use the Worthington Public Library as well. If you are looking for a series, Cam Jansen and Jigsaw Jones are two great ones to use! |
