Here, the kids are looking at the clouds, trying to determine what kind they are and what kind of weather is associated with that kind of cloud!
This week we started our weather unit. We've introduced the water cycle and talked about the different kinds of clouds. Here, the kids are looking at the clouds, trying to determine what kind they are and what kind of weather is associated with that kind of cloud!

Well, it's official- the kids did great on our first WTW spelling test! I was so impressed with how well they remembered the sorts and spelling all the words correctly. Since we have only a week until Break, most of the kids will do a sort using contractions because we briefly started talking about them this past week. The new spelling homework menu that will come home on Monday reflects the shorter time frame as there are 3 things to be done instead of 5.
I was impressed to see that many kids chose the email the words option on the menu! I mentioned it to Mrs. Strock and so she taught the kids in Library yesterday how to create a Google Doc using their spelling words. Today I , with Finn Mahoney as our resident expert, showed them how to get into their Spelling words Google Doc and then Finn showed everyone how to "Share" or email that document to me. It was so exciting for the kids to see their email to me pop up into my gmail account! Now I want to let you know some ground rules I have set regarding use of their email account: The kids had a bunch of fun creating their leprechaun traps and even more fun seeing what Lucky the Leprechaun had brought them! Aren't these traps great?! Now for the reactions the kids had today when they saw the room had been visited by the leprechaun who left them chocolate coins, green plastic coins and little notes for each of them. The leprechaun was very tricky, leaving some notes backwards so the kids had to look at them in the mirror to read them! The new spelling program, Words Their Way, has been going very well at school. Here are some pictures of the kids working on their sorts. Their favorite so far is the Speed Sort where they time themselves or a friend to see how fast and accurately they can sort their words. Over the last few days the children have been learning how to write a paragraph. They then wrote one about their favorite book, and with the app Tellegami, created an avatar and recorded themselves reading their paragraph. Look for your child's avatar on email soon! Don't forget that on Friday we have our COSI field trip. I will send home a reminder note on Thursday about the trip :) And finally, I just had to share this picture of Finn who made these hysterical hands in art today! Good afternoon everyone! I would like to take a moment to thank everyone for coming to the Breakfast with a Famous American on Friday. The turn out was lovely and the kids were so excited to share with you all they had learned over the past month. The projects came out so well and we have YOU to thank for it! To everyone who came in and helped with the art project, the timeline, the books...I can not thank you enough. Your commitment to our room really makes a huge impact and is much appreciated!
I have attached in the parent area the new newsletter, calendar and book report. I have also updated the link for the volunteer calendar so I hope they all work! Hard copies will all be coming home but I know it helps to have it on line if you are missing it. On Friday I will be sending home information about a new spelling program we are going to try out in our classroom. Many classrooms both here and at other schools in the District use the Words Their Way program and we are going to start using it next week. I think it will be a great fit for our classroom as it really targets instruction right at where the child is developmentally in their spelling. There will still be work that comes home and will need to be done but I am getting ahead of myself! I will have it all ready for you to see on Friday :) |
