Just a reminder that next Friday will be the Dance-a-thon!!
The kids picked "Beach" as their theme and music to dance to so we'd love the kids to dress up accordingly!
Sneakers, shorts, t-shirts, sun hat and/or glasses will be great-
Please no beach balls, flipflops, or bathing suits :)
Second grade dances from 10:30-11:00 in the gym. The organizers of this event are looking for parent volunteers to monitor the students in the gym while they dance. If you are interested, we will see you on Friday at 10 in the gym- and bring your dancing shoes!

This past Thursday we were so lucky to have Dr. Becker come to visit our school and talk with us about several of his books. The children really liked hearing about his adventures in Africa on safari and when he cornered an escaped cheetah from running out of the Columbus Zoo!! It was great to hear him talk about how each of those events had a "small moment" story in them - perfect because that is what we have been focused on in Writers Workshop this week! Children have been hard at work thinking of and now writing small moment stories of their own. We have read several mentor texts to see how other authors have used small moments in their lives to create a story for all to enjoy. Books like Roxaboxen, The relatives came, Bigmama's, Shortcut, Owl Moon, and Goggles are just a few that talk about times with family, friends, or having visitors. These books helped to spring board discussions about what events the kids have had in their lives that they can write about.

ST Math
The staff attended a training this past week to help us get the most out of ST Math. One thing they wanted us to focus on both in the classroom and at home is the fluency piece. Because we will be loosing Reflex Math in October, ST Math will be our primary way of having kiddos practice quick recall. When you child works on this at home, remind them they need to do the 10 minutes of fluency first before going into the cones. I have included a snapshot what what that looks like. You'll notice in the upper left-hand corner there is a box with operation symbols and the 10 min with timer. They need to click on that and it will get them right in. Don't forget that kids should be doing 30 minutes (10 minutes fluency and 20 minutes in the cones) 2 times a week if at all possible. They can of course do more than that!! This on-line program also has an app for tablets. I have a school code if you need it. A parent letter will be coming on Monday with more information.
Since they don't want us to give children the answers to how to solve a puzzle, here are some questions you can use with your child if they get stuck-
