This week we started Read to Someone in Daily 5. This is one of the kids favorites because it means they get to read with a friend! We practiced how to choose a partner, sit "EEKK" (Elbow to elbow, Knee to knee) with partners and how to choose who goes first. Today we added "coaching". The above bookmark is used when their partner does not know a word or needs help figuring the word out. If their partner all of a sudden stops, they wait three seconds and then ask "Do you need to be coached or time to figure it out?" The partner responds which they want and then they proceed down the list of options. We talked a lot about watching what their partner does and then based on that, help them with a strategy. What was great was that they came up with a lot more strategies than what was on the bookmark! Esther has finally arrived to join us in Room 103! The children were super excited when they saw her this morning and enjoyed watching her adjust to the room today. It will be the Lucky Duck's job each day to feed Esther a treat which really got the kids attention today when Esther got her treat! The kids all had a chance to pet her and learn some of the rules we have with her in the room. We will be reading and doing research on rabbits this week as a part of our daily writing so stay tuned to regular updates on Esther! In spelling today the kids started using the many file and envelope games I have that involve long and short vowel sounds. I am happy to share that Ms. Nowland our newest second grade teacher has created a help document for those who are unsure of how to proceed with regards to the spelling packet. I have attached it here in a button but also have it in the parent resource area along with the answers for quicker access. It breaks down each page and what the expectations are. I have also added an answer packet so you know what to expect. I was unable to edit her Google doc so there are 3 differences I wanted to point out.
"Words missed"- these could possibly be on the next test but they will definitely be on upcoming tests. Please still continue to work with your child on these words. "Super Speller" - everyone will get the same amount. They are fixed. They are not on the test but are great words to stretch their spelling and are usually vocabulary words for things we are learning in school. "Word Preview"- this will always be filled out at school We will usually fill out two or three pages of the back together at school and then send the rest home to be finished up over the course of the week. Once we get to the end of October, all 6 pages in the back will be done at home. And again please have your child complete each of the pages. I had several kiddos put down 3 or 4 or 6 words for a couple of pages. All 15 spots (I told them they could ask for help for any of this) on "Add It" and "Find It" should be filled in. If you need any help please don't hesitate to email me! I can not tell you how impressed I am with my kiddos today! They had a full day, complete with picture day, studying for their spelling and math tests tomorrow AND MAP testing! They did such an awesome job getting all their work done in a timely manner and concentrated so hard on their MAP I clipped everyone up a level! Here is a picture from MAP testing- everyone hard at work! This is Daily 5 Read to Self. They are up to 25 minutes of independent reading! Here you can see Riley using the document camera to explain to the class her strategy for solving a math problem. Her work was shown up on the board while she talked, pointing out how she got the answer. Don't forget that tomorrow is picture day! If you haven't already done so, please make sure your child returns the envelope filled out tomorrow morning. We will also be taking the math portion of the MAP tests tomorrow as well.
Yesterday we were so excited that our caterpillar finally turned into a butterfly! At first we thought maybe something had happened to the caterpillar because her chrysalis turned brown and moldy. But then all of a sudden she emerged from her chrysalis! She dried off her wings for a few hours and then we let her fly away. She landed on a tree and continued to dry her wings for awhile longer. What a wonderful experience it was for the class! So today we finished our triarama's. The kids had to pick their favorite Arthur story and then create a setting from that story. As you can tell they came out great! More math pictures- focus today was on even and odd numbers! We had several games going and a cut and paste activity. And hurray to Meredith- The first person to clip up so high she was off the chart which means the clip goes in my hair all day!!
Just a reminder that scholastic book orders are due tomorrow. You can either send in a check made out to scholastic or you can go online to order. I believe my code is LM4VC. The great news about scholastic books is that for every dollar you spend I get points to redeem for the classroom! https://clubs2.scholastic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/LogonForm
Also don't forget that the newsletter and calendar are both online in the parent resource area and sign up to the right for a subscription letting you know when I post. Have a great Wednesday everyone! |
