Today we continued our pursuit of figurative language! The kids created and decorated hats that showcased idioms and similies. Once done the kids switched hats and tried to figure out what they were wearing!
Economics Project News
From The Mayor’s Office The pretend business proposals for our Economic Simulation Project are complete!! Not every student proposed a business. Some students are employed at a business instead of proposing their own business. We also have 2 police officers offering to keep the peace! We will be making signs for business as well as signs to advertise business this week and next at school. At home, kids can be gathering or making their products. Kids can bring in their products on May 7th or if they have food, May 8th. Current Economic Concepts we are starting to talk about: - Economic problems: scarcity of time, space and goods - Economic vocabulary: barter, good, service, producer, consumer. Questions you might ask your child to get a conversation started at home: Did you apply for a job? How much money do you have? Did you rent any space or furniture? Did you hire anyone? Does your business have a name? **Businesses are open Friday May 8th from 10:15-10:45 --parents and siblings are encouraged to come visit the second grade towns. There are about 80 second graders visiting the towns. The town will be open again from 12:30-1:00 for the 1st grade classes to come and visit. There are about 80 students as well. It would be ideal for your child to have about 50 of their product total - 25 for the morning session and 25 for the afternoon session. More information to follow! Wow.....was Friday awesome!! First we did the OREO project (thanks Lesley and Rishanna for coming in to help ) which was one of the best math projects I think I have ever done. To get ready for this day we practiced a few days before learning how to use a calculator and crunch the numbers. Then to make it more fun I had them collect data that was more personal- pencils. They really liked when they counted the number of pencils they had in their desk and then they practiced figuring out the median, mode, mean and range. Can you believe we actually had 0 at one end and 14 as the highest number of pencils in one desk?! On Friday the kids were ready and so excited to crunch the numbers for the Oreo stacking competition. The kids were so engaged and loved every minute of it, not even realizing that it was math they were doing :) Hopefully they had fun stories to share on how they stacked their cookies! Then we had Mr. Bradley come to visit and share his job of being a Meteorologist. The kids loved sharing with him all they had learned these past few weeks! What a wonderful, busy week back! The kids started working on their severe weather reports... The kids played a version of 20 questions using vocabulary words we have been learning this year. They had to figure out the word by asking what the antonym, synonym, definition , example and non-example of their word was. We made flip books to practice nonfiction text features and what they are used for... Looked for books to represent different genres in literature... Informational writing was our focus this week. This time the kids practiced blowing bubbles with bubble gum and then wrote a paragraph on how to blow a bubble, remembering to include an introductory and concluding sentence along with their steps. Here are a few of the ones that finished today... The new April newsletter and calendar have been posted but I don't have an electronic copy of the book report on Poetry. It went home today so if it doesn't make it, let me know! ![]() Finally, I the OREO Project day was moved to Friday, April 17th same time 10-11 so if anyone is game, come on in and help!! Don't forget to send the Oreo's by next Thursday. Thanks! |
