Sorry for the delay in posting...I have been having trouble with the school's network in being able to post pictures. But all is good now and there is alot to share with you that has been going on this past week!
It was a great day last week when Mrs. Rykowski confirmed that I would be able to replace my classroom desks with tables for the upcoming school year! My hope had been to create more walk-able space throughout the classroom and tables seemed the way to go, similar to Mrs. Evans' room.
One of the standards we have in all areas of academics is, "How does this lesson or skill relate to real life, in particular, to a real world job?" So for this math lesson, we talked about how interior designers, engineers, and architects all have to figure out how to measure for a circle. Since we needed to know how many tables could fit in this space we set about figuring it out! We introduced words like compass, radius, circumference, diameter, and pi, width, and length. Kids went up to Ms. Evan's room and measured the diameter of the tables. From there they figured out the center point, cut a piece of string that long and made a homemade compass. Working together, kids made their circle and then cut them out. Below you will see pictures of this process

Then when they finished, they had the opportunity to practice using a compass!
Last weeks trip to COSI was a ton of fun!
Kids are continuing to work on their multi-paragraph stories based the the book, My Father's Dragon. Look for those to be hung up outside our room after break. (If your child does not finish the work on Thursday, they will be taking it home to finish it over the Break.)
Here we are playing a St. Patrick's Day probability game. The kids had 12 markers to put where ever they wanted on the card. They had to them roll two dice, add them up and if a marker was on that number, remove it. The person with no markers on their board wins. After they played several times, we shared strategies- never put it on 1, it is impossible to get the sum of 1, doubles are harder to roll, so put less on doubles numbers, odd numbers were easier to get and my favorite- chose a number that is not 2 digits because there are more combinations only 5 + 6 makes 11!!! Love it!!
Now the best for last! Dr. Courtney came in and dissected a cow's eye today! She also brought in a whale eye (in the large container) and cats eyes (small container). I was mightily impressed that the kids did not freak out, nor thankfully, throw up!! It was amazing!
