Welcome to 2017! Don't forget that conferences are coming up in February and that they are student led. This means that your child is in charge of the conference and will be showing you all the work they have been doing this past few weeks :) .....so don't forget to bring them with you!
The kids have really been enjoying learning multiplication these past few weeks. I really had to spend time explaining the difference between rows and columns before we could even get started ...
Once they mastered that, creating arrays was much easier to do. Children then played a game by which they rolled 2 die and created an array based on what numbers came up. They also enjoyed using paint to create "array-nbows"
To keep on the topic of multiplication with ST Math, Mrs. Payne came in to do a puzzle talk about JiJi and the puzzles he encoutners that have to do with multiplication.
Kids created goals and resolutions for the upcoming year...
Another math investigation we had fun with was to try to create as many 2 digit number problems that when added together made 100. It was a wonderful excersice not just in math, but in working with a parnter and communication.
In Science we have started 2 units on animals - "All about animals" and Environments for living things". The kids have enjoyed learning about the classification of animals and food chains. Next week we will be looking at habitats, life cycles, adaptations, and ways they defend themselveves. Later in January each child will be creating a research project on an animal and creating a habitat diorama (--all done in class).
To get us warmed up with coins I am some flashcards for the kids to practice with. Now before we do any lessons with money we grab out the cards, refresh our knowledge and then start the lesson. Please make sure you continue to work with your child identifying the name and amount the coin is worth. If your kiddo is great at that, move on to trying to make amounts using the least number of coins, practice converting pile of coins to a dollor (or more) and finally, working with creating change.
Finally, Mrs. Moore came in to talk and read about tolerance.
Have a great long weekend and stay safe with the ice tomorrow!
