This week we started Read to Someone in Daily 5. This is one of the kids favorites because it means they get to read with a friend! We practiced how to choose a partner, sit "EEKK" (Elbow to elbow, Knee to knee) with partners and how to choose who goes first. Today we added "coaching". The above bookmark is used when their partner does not know a word or needs help figuring the word out. If their partner all of a sudden stops, they wait three seconds and then ask "Do you need to be coached or time to figure it out?" The partner responds which they want and then they proceed down the list of options. We talked a lot about watching what their partner does and then based on that, help them with a strategy. What was great was that they came up with a lot more strategies than what was on the bookmark!
We have done take turns with pages, you read a page then I read a page, voices together and tomorrow we practice copycat. The poster below is a visual cue for the kiddos.
