Hi everyone! Just back from the Grand Canyon where we surprised by blizzard conditions during part of our stay! Luckily we had one good day! The pictures don't do the 50 MPH wind justice or the snow squalls! Most of the time, you couldn't even see the edge of the canyon...crazy! Before we went I forwarded the Ball pictures from Sam so hopefully you all got them! Here is the link for the youtube video he also shot If for some reason it doesn't work, here is the link: https://youtu.be/9_lv7zuoRYg It is so fun to watch! Now, somehow my answers to the reindeer brain busters did not make it into my post before Break so here there are again... ![]() The key was to know that there was a double in the mix....21 doubled is 42. and 21 is the only one with a multiple of 7. ![]() This one was way fun and challenging! I skipped the first one and moved to the second...the kids know to work with the numbers they know- here iy is 51 and 9 so 51-9= 42. Since the candy cane has to be the same number 42 cut in half is 21. Next I looked at what 2 numbers subtracted could equal 4 ...one of those numbers would have to be a multiple of the candy cane (21). ![]() This was the hardest one of all!!! I started in row 3 since the same number showed up 3 times in the same row. If you haven't already done this one I would maybe tell them 2 of the shapes and see if they can get it from there....maybe 3. This might ease the frustration ;) ![]() This one was my favorite. I started to the right first. Then after seeing it was 5 for each bell, I looked to the left. If 30 was on one side then divided in half each reindeer was 15. Then I plugged the numbers into the bottom problem. Wow, was that challenging! What is great about this challenge is that it really uses problem solving to plot your way through it. Our upcoming test in Feb/March have many of these kinds of math problems so we are beginning to expose kids to these kinds of questions now so they are ready :) Remember, do these kinds of problems in small doses, and show them your thought process when you solve this along side them. Hearing you, like they hear me, talk about how we tackle these kinds of problems is invaluable to their learning math. Struggling and disequilibrium is ok! They need a little bit of struggle to be able to use their problem solving skills as well as their coping skills. If it is to much of a struggle, back off and just do one or two. We want a little discomfort, not a melt down! These aren't as good as Sam's but at least they will do until we get his! What an incredible day we had today! Thanks to everyone who contributed their time putting up all the decorations, cleaning up, and bringing in the food. It was a day full of laughter, love and celebration of friendships. Here is just a sampling from today's events. More pictures to come from Sam so stay tuned! Here are images from a banner we made asking why our Cinderella's glass slipper would not come off in the first place! And so we traveled once again to places near and far, in search of Cinderella... This week we visited England where the book Tattercoats is the Cinderella story children there are familiar with, and learned that bangers and mash is sausage and mashed potatoes. Then on to Mexico where book Adelita introduced us to many Spanish words and we learned about luchador wrestler and bullfighters! Next up was the country of Egypt. This Cinderella story, The Egyptian Cinderella, is mostly a true story and historians tell us it is the oldest next to the Chinese version. Lastly, we read The Rough-faced Girl, a Native American tale that told about a young girl and how she captured the heart of the Invisible Being. That brings us back home, our trip complete. 10 stories and countries in all. Did you know there are actually between 350 and 1500 versions?! We practiced developing patterns this week... Enjoyed a Christmas concert... And enjoyed a visit from Delaney's Grandma who came to talk with us about compassion. We did more role playing on how to be a compassionate friend... and then practiced giving compliments and letting a friend know how much of a gift they are to the classroom. Our trip around the world in search of a good Cinderella story has just begun! This past week we visited 5 countries and enjoyed a Cinderella tale from each of them. First up was France where we learned they have 500 different kinds of cheese and their Cinderella tale is the closest to the Disney story. Then on to Korea where many kids knew about the country because they study Tae Kwon Do. Their story, The Korean Cinderella, was beautifully illustrated and had a goblin instead of a fairy godmother! Next up was Iraq where we learned that they enjoy racing pigeons. Their story was The Golden Sandal, about a girl who was counseled by a red fish as her fairy godmother. After that we traveled to China reading Ye-Shen and learning that the whole country uses only 1 time zone- the time in Beijing! Lastly, we went to South Africa where the world's largest diamond was found and their tale Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters where the King himself was the magic. Where we go next? Stay tuned :) Here are some pictures of PJ Day! Don't forget that Friday is mismatch day! Don't forget if you know anyone who is looking to make donations for tax purposes by the end of the year, my DonorsChose page link on the landing page to my website. We have had several donations, even one from Mrs. Stack's mother-in-law! Welcome to December- full of fun, merriment, and lots of stories about Cinderella! This month we will be hopscotching around the world getting to know many different countries and the Cinderella stories told there. The culminating event will be our annual Cinderella Ball to take place this year on December 17th. All kiddos are encouraged to dress as Kings, Queens, Princes, Princesses or Knights for the festive event which includes watching the new movie Cinderella, dancing, fun drinks and of course food! The book report, calendar and newsletter have all been posted in the parent section for this month. Note that the book report can be done on any Fairy Tale your child is interested in reading. The form came home today but if you missed it, you can down load it from the parent area. In addition to starting our multicultural unit the kids learned about polygons today! We also shared our dioramas today- awesome job everyone!! Tom Turkey has been hiding out in our room these past few weeks, hoping not to be noticed and eaten! Great job on all the creative ways to hide a turkey! Gobble, gobble, gobble! Homework went home today- just some odds and ends to keep kiddos thinking over break :) Have a wonderful and relaxing Thanksgiving!
Check out the crazy hair we had today! It was also classroom gallery today! Yesterday we had a teacher come to visit from ST Math to show us how to use part of the ST program- here we are learning about geometry. We shared our Pilgrim boxes and then wrote about what we brought... Practiced identifying suffixes... And finally we worked in small groups looking at things that Pilgrims did and things we can do today. It took us two days but well worth the effort! Goodness, I am exhausted but so proud of all the work we accomplished this week!
How wonderful it was to have Debbie Clement come back to visit us for the second time! Because most of the kids had seen her in Kindergarten, they remembered her and were super excited to see her. I sent the video from part of your time together but here are the pictures.... Today we were blessed to have a visitor! Our Circle of Grandparent this year is Delaney's grandmother and she came today to talk with us about self-control and self-discipline. The kids had a chance to act out several scenes to practice role playing how to maintain self-control when you are mad or frustrated. At the end she had the kids practice taking belly breathes to help them slow down, breathe, and then make a good choice. The buttons are "pause" buttons to help remind them to pause and think before they act. We look forward to her visiting us every month and will keep you posted on the new topics she comes in to discuss! Many things came home but keep a special eye out for this, a letter explaining a history lesson that requires a few items. Please note this is not due for 2 weeks but we wanted to make sure you had it in enough time :) Great time had by all and thanks so much to all the volunteers and room moms for making the party so wonderful- the kids had a blast!! All November items are now in the parent section! Writing Monster stories in Wixie and on Google Docs!Today in class we tested out an app that I want to use for their Monster stories that they are currently working on. The app combines a photo of something and then adds an overlay of words to the picture. It is called WordFoto and we tested it out with Halloween images and words that they brainstormed about Halloween. We used oil pastels on black construction paper. They came out great so the kids will do the same thing for their story- they will draw their monster and then add words from their story. Should look pretty awesome! The kids have been working really hard this week on their state reports and here is a sneak peek! Bats and owls are also of great interest this time of the year so we are doing some non-fiction work learning about these 2 fascinating creatures! And finally I have started a Shoe-tying Hall of Fame since so many kids have untied shoe laces! If they can show me that they can tie their shoes they get to decorate a shoe and get a little treat. Hopefully this will motivate kiddos to keep practicing so we can stay safe and keep those shoes on! This week to go with our math unit on 3 digit numbers, the kids picked a number and practiced decomposing it to see its place value. They came out so cute! Yesterday we started to talk about measuring with non-standard units of measurement which led to our work with rulers today. Here is some students using unifix cubes to measure. All week we have been really paying attention to the beginning, middle, and end of a story. Not only is it good to look at this from a comprehension stand point but also it helps writers make sure they have all the parts of their story! We read Stellaluna this week to practice our skills on identifying BME. First we made a flip page that was more of a retell, then made a craft that used our summarizing skills! After that, we looked again at the BME but this time we tracked how the character of Stellaluna felt during each part of the story.
Today we had Classroom Gallery for the first time! Mrs. Thompson and Mrs. Piloseno came in to talk about Georgia O'Keeffe . After a PowerPoint about her work, the kids created poppys based on her famous painting. They are currently drying and the poppies will be ready to go home next week.
